Abstract
26,570. Denny, C. W. Nov. 16. Automatic circuit-breakers.-A switch with automatic overload release comprises an electro-magnet 25 mounted in the base of the switch, an external operating-handle 1 extending through the crown of the casing and adapted to engage a cam-surface on the pivoted contact-member 6, and a catch 14 which holds the contact-member in its ' oil ' position and is adapted to be released manually or by means of the electro-magnet in the event of overload. The catch 14 carries an arm 17, which is engaged by a sliding-wedge 18 operated by a pushbutton 20. The armature 27 of the electro-magnet is normally held against an adjustable stop 29 by a spring 30 and carries a plunger 28 which is adapted to trip the catch 14. In a modification, the catch is split and is engaged by a collar on the rod 19 connected to the push-button 20. In a further modification, the push-button is dispensed with, and the rod 19 is operated by a reverse movement of the knob 1. The shape of the member 6 may be such that the switch cannot be held on by the knob 1 in the event of overload. To facilitate making the connexions, the base is provided with an extension 31, which may be bent at right-angles or made in two parts screwed together. An indicator arranged to appear behind a hole in the casing may be carried by the contact-member. For a double-pole switch two switches may have their knobs and releasing push-buttons coupled together, the magnet being placed between them.
