Abstract
26,253. Oppenheim, A. Nov. 12, 1908, [Convention date]. Printing processe.-Fabrics of cotton or other fibre, vegetable or animal, such as linen, wool, silk, or jute, are given various damask, coloured, and goffered effects, usually by printing, by treating for from a fraction of a second to a few seconds, with weak or concentrated sulphuric acid, or substances having a similar caustic or corrosive action, such as phosphoric acid, zinc chloride, alum, or cuprammonia solution ; the effects are : increasing the strength of the treated fibre; altering the lightrefracting quality of the fibre ; enabling the fabric to take a permanent goffering or the like ; altering the receptivity of the fibre for various dyes. In an example, a protective coating is printed upon untreated, bleached, or previously dyed fabric, which is either mechanical, or chemical, such as alkali ; alkali may be replaced by an acetate in the case of animal fibres. After quick treatment with 30-100 per cent sulphuric acid, the fabric is at once well washed. A similar effect is produced by printing on the corrosive &c. substance with intaglio or relief rollers. The goods can be dried at once, or, while damp, can be treated in suitable pressing apparatus, preferably heated, such as smooth calender rollers, or pressing or goffering machines. The pressing or like effects remain permanent on the parts treated with sulphuric acid &c. The parts of the fabric not treated with the acid &c. lose the goffering or like effects on washing or stretching wet, or mercerizing, with or without stretching, calendering, &c., so that, for example, a fluted design running in the opposite direction to the line of the fabric can be obtained, giving a genuine damask appearance. The treated fabrics dye uniformly with direct dyes &c., while the treated portions are acted upon more strongly or even exclusively by basic dyes ; various effects are obtained by taking advantage of these circumstances. In one example a cotton fabric or undressed satin, bleached or dyed, is printed with an aqueous mixture of sodium hydrate, maize starch, British gum, sodium bisulphite, sodium or zinc hydrosulpbite, and glycerine. The fabric is dried and a thin layer of strong sulphuric acid applied, preferably on one side only. The fabric is at once rinsed, wrung, and well washed with or without precedent neutralization by aqueous ammonia &c. The Specification in the original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), comprises also the following matters : (1) The apparatus used for applying the layer of acid " may be an ordinary " Foulard (with suitable rollers, of course)." (2) A washing silk glaze can be given the fabric on the treated portions of it by using fluted rollers &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
