Abstract
21,745. Jones, C. J., and Still, W. C. Sept. 23. Plates and the like, washing.-In a machine for washing plates &c., the plates are carried by an endless conveyer through washing and rinsing tanks, and are automatically gripped and released on the top run of t h e conveyer. Figs. 2 and 3 are side and end elevations, respectively, of the machine. The conveyer comprises endless chains 10, which run over pulleys on a frame 4 resting on blocks 6 on a tank which is divided into two compartments by a partition 3. The conveyer chains pass over a driving-pulley 9 above the partition. The plates are held by grips 12, which slide on rods 11 connecting the chains 10 and are pulled together to grip the plates by springs 14. Arms 16 on each grip are extended at one end and formed with holes through which the adjacent rods 11 pass. The grips are provided with rollers 18, which engage with a cam-plate 19 on the top run of the conveyer, so that the grips are opened for insertion and removal of the plates. The plates rest on arms 15 when released by the grips, each arm being carried on one of the rods 11 and supported at one end by another. The plates are inserted in the grips on the top run of the conveyer and are then carried through the washing - tank 2 past a rotary brush 21 and into the rinsing-tank 1. They are then raised to the top of the conveyer and released. The tank 1 is supplied with water from a three-way cock 34, through which water may be directed into the tank through a pipe 35 or through a series of pipes 31 above gas-burners 30. The water in the tank 2 is heated by means of pipes 40 connected thereto at different levels. The scum on the top of the water flows into a trough 43 at the top of the tank 2, and passes away through an outlet pipe 44. In order to remove the deposit from the bottom of the tank, a pipe 45 extends therefrom into the trough, so that on closing the mouth of the pipe until the water in the tank rises to the level of the trough and then opening it, water flows from the bottom of the tank into the trough and escapes through the pipe 44, carrying the deposit with it. The rotary brush 21 is driven by an internally - toothed wheel formed with openings in its disk, through which the brush spindle and the toothed pinion thereon can be drawn, so that the brush can be readily replaced. Fig. 3<a> shows a method of constructing the brush in which coco-nut or other fibres are secured in a helical groove formed on a tubular metallic stock by a wire tightly wound over them and fixed at each end to the stock, as by soldering.
