Abstract

224,658. White, A. E., (McKenna Brass & Manufacturing Co., Inc.). Sept. 25, 1923. Bottles, washing.-An endless Conveyer 3 carries the bottles above and through a caustic solution contained in a tank 24 and under a series of rows of rotatable nozzles 14, 14<a> - - 14c for washing or rinsing the bottles internally and externally both while in the fluid and while submerged therein. The nozzles are rotated by the engagement of a trip 21, carried by each successive row of bottles, with a. finger 20, Fig. 3. secured to each of the transverse pipes 15 supplying the nozzles, the pipes 15 being returned to their initial positions, after the passage of a row of bottles, by springs 16. Clean water from an external source is passed through a pipe 36, Fig. 4, immersed in the hct caustic solution, to the final rinsing nozzles 14<c>. After being sprayed into or over the bottles this water is collected in a sump 32, Fig. 2, and pumped therefrom through pipes 33<1>. 34 to the preliminary rinsing nozzles 14d and to the nozzles 14 which wash the bottles before immersion in the caustic solution. The water from both these series of nozzles is collected by sumps 37, 39 respectively and is run to waste through pipes 38, 40. Caustic solution is drawn from the tank through a sump 53 and strainer 54 by a second pump 42, and is passed through a pipe 43, which is divided into two portions 44, 45. The solution traversing the pipe 44 is passed to the nozzles 14a and 14<c> and a portion is passed through a small pipe 49 discharging into a pipe 50 of greater diameter so that, by the injector action thus set up, a circulation of solution in the tank is established ensuring that labels and other rubbish shall be caught in a strainer 52 carried between the end of the tank and a dam 51, one end of the pipe 50 terminating in the pipe. The solution that passes through the pipe 45 is heated in an external coil 46 and is passed to the series of nozzles 14<b>. The preliminary washing nozzles 14 and the rinsing nozzles 14d, 14e are housed in chambers 12 provided with rubber curtains 30 and with curved sheets of metal 22 from which water, derived from the nozzles, is discharged on to the bottoms of the bottles.
