Abstract

21,485. Just, A. C. Sept. 18, 1908, [Convention date]. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; propelling. - An aerial machine is raised by flapping wings which are formed of curved flexible rods c covered with fabric, so that on the up-stroke the wings are curved downwards, and are extended flat on the downstroke. Two or more pairs of wings a, b are provided, either superposed as shown, or arranged in the same plane. The inner sides of the upper wings may be connected by loosely-arranged fabric to retard the fall of the machine. The wings are pivoted at e to the frame of the machine, and the inner ends of the rods c are hollowed to receive bars f, which are hinged at the middle and connected to the connecting-rods h of the crank-shaft g. On the forward end of the shaft g is fixed a propeller m which drives air under the wings and at the rear end is a fly-wheel r. Steering.-At the rear of the machine is an openended box n containing vertical rudders o, and vertical ruddersp may be arranged outside the box. Stopping way.-The rudders o, p may be placed at right-angles to the direction of travel to stop the machine.
