Abstract

21,419. Hodgkinson, W. R. Sept. 20. Case-hardening. - A process for case-hardening iron, iron alloys, mild steel, and articles made therefrom, consists in heating the metal in the presence of cyclic or heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen, or mixtures of such compounds. Suitable compounds are stated to be primary amines, such as aniline, toluidine, naphthylamines, or their compounds with acids, the formyl, acetyl, and like derivatives such as formanilide and acetanilide, secondary amines, tertiary amino and amine derivatives such as pyridine or quinoline or their compounds with acids, phenylhydrazine and the like and their salts, and the amides or ammonium salts of benzenoid acids such as ammonium benzoate or naphthoate. The carburizing-agent is sprayed or dropped into the heating - chamber, and some may be introduced with the metal; or the vapours may be introduced into the heating- chamber from a separate vessel with or without a carrying gas or vapour. Parts of the metal not to be carburized may be suitably protected, for example by a mixture of asbestos and sodium silicate.
