Abstract

21,045. Turnbull, J. M. Sept. 14. Planes, construction and arrangement of; steering. -The supporting-planes of an aerial machine are adapted to be dismounted and furled in the manner of a boat's sails. Horizontal or slightly-inclined masts a are secured to each side of the hull and carry yards b, to which the planes c are attached. The inner ends of the planes may be secured to the hull, or to each other by lacing, or they may be integrally formed. The planes may be oppositely inclined for balancing purposes by means of a cross rod d rocking about a longitudinal axis e, the rod being secured to the yards b. Instead of a single sheet, the plane may be constructed of separate strips h, the inner ends being varied in elevation as shown in Fig. 4. Two or more pairs of masts may be used, the planes being stepped relatively to each other.
