Phonographs; gramophones; records; stylus mountings; diaphragms. -Records for talking- machines are formed with grooves having wave-shaped deviations in the horizontal plane, as in the Berliner records, and deviations in the vertical plane, as in the Edison records. The compounded waves are produced in the arrangement shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 from two synchronously vibrating diaphragms 6 placed at right-angles to each other, both simultaneously acting upon the same graving-tool 2, which is mounted so as to vibrate round two intersecting axes. In another arrangement, only one diaphragm is used, and the graver is mounted to vibrate round two intersecting axes, or round only one axis positioned slantwise to the record surface, and transversely of the direction of its motion. In a further modification, shown in inverted plan in Fig. 4, the graver 14 is axially vibrated directly by the diaphragm 13, the direction of its vibration being slantwise to the record surface and transversely of the direction of the motion of the same. The graving-tool in the last modification is constrained to move axially by distance-rods 16. One of the side walls of the record groove, Fig. 7, is made nearly at right-angles to the record surface, and the graver or stylus is kept pressed against it by a spring 27, Fig. 9, acting on the tonearm 30 by means of the projection 33. By means of the lever 34, the tone-arm can be relieved from the pressure of the spring.
