Extinguishing wick burners.-Relates to safety lamps for petroleum or like combustible wherein it is rendered impossible for the combustible to come into contact with the flame when the lamp is upset, and more particularly to that kind wherein a flame-exbinguishing liquid which is heavier than oil has access to the oil reservoir. In the present construction, the whole of the oil floats on the extinguishing-liquid. The reservoir a, Fig. 1, is shaped as shown, so that, when upset, the burner is below it. The oil-reservoir a also contains a flame-extinguishing liquid such as solutions of potasb, soda, and other lyes, or a mixture of the same with silicate in weak solution, these solutions being heavier than oil. When used with a flatflame burner, as shown in Fig. 3, the liquid passes to the flame through tapering passages f, which are normally closed by clack valves h. When used with a round burner, the liquid passes through a tapering annular chamber l normally closed by a ring m, and pleated at p so that the liquid reaches every part of the burning wick.
