Clubs.-The impulsive force with which a golf club &c. strikes a ball, and the point of contact between the face and the ball, are indicated by a device contained within the head of the club. The striking - face of the club is formed of a spring-controlled plate b, Fig. 1, rollers upon the inner face of which engage with spring - controlled pivoted sectors e, Fig. 4. When the ball is struck by the middle of the striking - face, the sectors are rocked equally and, by means of links i, displace a block j, bearing a pointer m, parallel to itself along the slot shown. If the middle of the striking-face does not strike the ball, the sectors are rocked unequally and the pin k of the block and, consequently, the pointer m are rotated as well as moved bodily towards the rear face of the club. Pawls o engage ratchet-teeth upon the sectors and keep them in the position to which they have been moved by the impulsive force; the pawls are released upon the depression of a projecting plate which engages the spring q controlling the pawls.
