Abstract

17,775. Seymour, R. C. July 30. Associating, cutting and delivery apparatus; gripper mechanism.-Relates to a machine for severing from webs, and associating, covers and printed sheets, stapling them, severing them when desired in the direction of feed into a number of pamphlets, folding them against a fixed blade by spring grippers, and delivering them to a travelling conveyer. The folded pamphlets are gripped along the folded edges and delivered upwards through the air ; also the binding and slitting means are arranged to operate simultaneously, and reciprocating grippers convey the bound pamphlets t) the portion for folding. The printed webs 1, 2 pass down a throat 7, 8 and are severed into sheets by cutting-cylinders 5, 6 ; successive ends of the sheets are taken by grippers on cylinders 9, 11, all the sheets being then transferred to the cylinder 11, where they are associated if desired with a cover cut off by knives 17, 18 from a web conveyed by bands 15, 12. A set of vertically reciprocating knives 29 may be used to cut the associated sheets and cover in the direction of feed at the same time as the pamphlets are stapled transversely by devices 25 of ordinary construction. The sheets are positioned for this by stops 40 on a set of grippers 42, sliding in guides 46, which grip the pamphlets and draw them over a fixed blade 53 for folding. Cam surfaces 47, 76 open the grippers 42 at the receiving and delivering positions by means of the tripping-arm 45.
