Indicating small movements; magnifying by plate and roller.-In a gauge for measuring linear movements and deflexions, such as the cleflexions in structures and bridges, a transmitting-member is passed between a friction roller, provided with an indicating-means, and a pressure roller mounted on a slide, such that any movement of the transmitting-member is transmitted to the indicating-means. Fig. 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a plan of the apparatus. The transmitting-member, which may be a wire, band, or the like, has one end attached to the material and the other end passing between the friction roller d and the pressure roller g. The roller d is mounted on the points e, e<1>, the latter being carried by a frame f, and has a counterbalanced indicating- arm c attached adapted to move over the dial b. The pressure roller g is mounted in a slide i, which is under the control of a spring in the body of the frame a, and an opening k is provided in the frame to allow the transmitting- member to be inserted. In a modification, the rotatable pointer may be replaced by a dial moving over a fixed pointer. Two pressure rollers may be employed instead of the single roller; or in place of the rollers grooved pulleys or disks may be employed.
