Yarns and threads, treating with liquids.- Raw silk is treated with a nearly boiling aqueous solution of a sulphonated vegetable or animal oil, such as sulphonated castor oil containing one part by volume of oil to two hundred parts or more by volume of water, and rendered slightly alkaline in reaction by ammonia, sodium carbonate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, disodium ammonium phosphate, borax, or other alkaline salt of an oxyacid, &c., until the sericin is almost entirely removed, leaving the fibroin with a coating of less than one per cent thereof.
