India-rubber, purifying.-For the purpose of eliminating albuminous, colouring, or mucous matters, dirt and woody particles, and any products of putrid or septic decomposition, from raw caoutchouc, gutta, balata, or the like the material is treated with an alkali or alkalies, or with an alkaline earth in addition to the treatment with a resin solvent as described in Specification 4692/06. The juice of palaquim leiocarpum or other palaquim is boiled for two hours with twice the quantity of aniline and one-third diluted sodium lye with the aid of a reflux cooler, and the undissolved gutta is separated, the process being repeated several times. The filtered gutta is freed by steam from the adhering extraction agent, which is carried off and recovered by condensation. From the solution, the aniline and other constituents are separated. In another example, 5000 kg. of the juice of Dyera plants are boiled with 6000 kg. of xylidine and 200 kg. of a 5 per cent solution of caustic potash, the process being as described above.
