India-rubber waste, utilizing ; devulcanizing.- Waste vulcanized rubber articles are devulcanized by boiling with sulpburic acid to which hydrochloric acid has been added. The material is disintegrated in about thirty minutes, after which the rubber is separated from the fibre, boiled with dilute alkali, washed, and dried. As an example of a suitable acid mixture, sulphuric acid of 60‹ BÚ. may be mixed with a somewhat greater quantity of hydrochloric acid, the whole being diluted with about eight volumes of water. Oxidizing-agents should be absent. It is stated that the process is similar in its effect to that described in Specification No. 12,525, A.D. 1906.
