Dynamometers, rotary transmission. -In a torsiometer provided with the usual sleeves B, C attached at one end to the shaft A and provided at the other end with disks E, G respectively, the relative rotation between which is to be measured, the disk E carries a resistance E<2> in circuit through slip rings and brushes H<3> with a battery H and an adjustable resistance H'. A contact arm G<2>, attached to the disk G, is adapted to move over the resistance E<2> and to take up a position depending upon the torque being transmitted. This arm can be put into circuit with a volt-meter J<3> and the battery through switches J<1>, J. In operation, the switches J, J<1> are moved so as to throw the voltmeter J<3> into circuit with the resistance E<2>, and the resistance H<1> is adjusted until the needle of the volt-meter moves to the end of its scale. The switches are then moved so as to connect the volt-meter with the contact arm G<2>, and readings giving the resistance of the two portions of the wire E<2> between its terminals and the point of contact of the arm G<2> are obtained. The switches may, however, be dispensed with. If the source of current is a dynamo driven from the shaft, a reading giving the power transmitted may be obtained. The wire E<2> may be so inclined to the contact - arm G<2> as to increase the resistance for a given movement of the arm, or the resistance may be made of a series of sections each of a convenient unit resistance.
