Abstract

11,981. Pease, E. L. May 21. [Cognate Application, 26,920/09.] Flexible metal tubes. - A flexible sheathing for air-pipes &c. is constructed by doubling two plates on strips one over the other in sinuous fashion, the said strips having holes punched out at regular intervals so that the ridges a' around the holes register to form an internal passage as shown in Fig. 3. The strips a may be shaped to give any desired outer form; the shape shown in Fig. 4 will give a cylindrical sheath. As shown in Fig. 6, the ends a<3> which do not form return bends may be turned down to present an external scale-like structure on the sides of the sheath, and projections may extend laterally from the strips a, as shown in Fig. 8, to furnish these scale plates. To extend the pitch of the folds, the strip may be shaped as shown in Fig. 9, and formed with lugs a<4> and projections a<6> on the lateral pieces a<5>. Two such strips are interlaced as in the modifications described above, and then, as shown in Fig. 10, the lugs a<4> are passed through slots b, and splayed out, and the projections a<6> are threaded into the slots c. The sheathing may be formed so as to contain more than one passage.
