Thermometers. - To obtain greater accuracy, long - stemmed thermometers are fitted with means for heating the stem to the same temperature as the bulb, which may consist of casings 10 containing mercury or the like above supporting-heads 3; also means such as casings 16, which are continuations of the casings 10 and contain asbestos &c., are provided to insulate the exposed portions. The thermometer is immersed above the head 3, and the conducting- liquid ensures the stem being heated. Strengthening and protecting rods 9, 23 are fitted as shown.
