Charging and discharging.-In apparatus for simultaneously discharging and charging gas retorts, coke ovens, and the like, the reciprocation of the pushing and charging member f is effected by raising and lowering its outer end f The charging-member comprises sectional side plates g pinned and slotted together, and push plates j, which are hooked on to the distance-pieces i or are carried by a pull-bar j' so that they may be raised above the coal on the return stroke. The lower end f<1> of the charging- member bears on a platform k, a counterweighted apron plate o forming an extension to the retort mouthpieces. Two or more charging-members may be adjustably mounted on one carriage so that two or more retorts may be discharged and charged simultaneously.
