Heating by electricity.-Air and other gases are sterilized by the action of ultra-violet rays produced by vapour electric lamps. For sterilizing the atmosphere of a room, mercury-vapour lamps 1 are placed in a chamber provided with baffleplates 5. The heat radiated sets up convection currents so that gradually the whole atmosphere of the room is subjected to the action of the rays. The air above a fermentation vat may be similarly treated.
