Abstract

7564. Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co., and Holloway, H. H. March 30. Operating swinging doors.-Relates to apparatus for operating simultaneously pairs of wagon doors from either side of the wagon. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a hopper wagon having pairs of doors hinged longitudinally. A transverse shaft 5, having turning-means at both ends, is provided with right and left handed screwed portions 13, 14, upon which work trunnion nuts 15, 16 connected by pairs of levers 18 to brackets 21 on the doors 2, 3. The trunnion nuts may be replaced by bracket-like nuts 22, 23, Fig. 5, provided with pins 24, 25, which slide in grooves in brackets fixed to the doors. The part of the shaft 5 traversing the hopper is provided with a protecting-sleeve 6. The invention may be applied to hopper wagons having doors hinged transversely, in which case the screwed shaft is arranged longitudinally and is made in one or more parts according to the number of pairs of doors. The parts of the shaft are geared together, and to a transverse shaft provided with turning-means at each end. The arrangement shown in Fig. 5 may be applied to a flat-bottomed wagon having a pair of central doors. Figs. 8 and 9 show a modified form of the apparatus as applied to a flat-bottomed wagon having side doors. The shaft 5, screwed at the centre, carries the operating- means for the door 3, and is geared to a shorter screwed shaft 37 carrying the operating-means for the door 2.
