Abstract

6635. Ream, J. March 21, 1908, [Convention date]. Shoots.- A shoot for conveying coal, ore &c. is built up of a series of sections flexibly connected together, each section carrying rollers which are adapted to run on cables coextensive with the shoot and yieldingly supported at each end, the delivery end of the shoot being mounted on a universal joint. Coal &c. is loaded into a hopper 2, mounted upon a framework 1 and provided with two spouts 2<a>, 2<b>, through either of which the coal may be delivered by means of a pivoted door 2<c>. The shoot comprises a series of sections 3, each of which consists of a cylindrical and tapering portion, the tapering portion fitting into the cylindrical portion of the next section. The end section 6 of the shoot is connected to the receiving- hopper 4 by means of a universal joint 7, 8, 9. The shoot is supported by rollers 17 upon two cables 10 passing over pulleys at their ends, to which are attached counterweights. In the edge of the cylindrical portion of each section is formed a V-shaped notch 14 adapted to receive a lug 16 carried by the next section, so as to prevent jamming of the different sections. Each section is coupled to the next by means shown in Fig. 7. Secured to hoops 13 surrounding each section are clevises 20, to which are attached the heart-shaped rings 21 of the coupling. This comprises as well a snap hook 22 and a shock-absorber 23, which is attached to the clevis of the next section by a short rope 27. From the spring buffer of the uppermost section, a cable 28 for paying out or taking in the shoot leads over a pulley 29 to a drum 30 rotated by a crank 31 or the equivalent. When it is desired to shorten the shoot by removing a few sections, these are relieved of the weight of the conveyer by attaching a temporary bridle to the next lower section, the rope 33 from such bridle leading over pulleys 34, 35. The rope 33 is made to take the weight of the conveyer, while the snap-hooks 22 of the sections to be taken out are released.
