COMBINED APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING AND HANDLING REFUSE 0F CITIES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,382, dated May 19, 1896. Application filed December 23, 1895. Serial No. 573,166. (No model.)

To all whom it may concernx Be it known that I, JOHN E. WALSH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Apparatus for Handling and Separating the Refuse of Cities, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in apparatus by means of which the substances contained in the refuse of cities are separated and handled preparatory to transporting them; and my invention consists in a combination of devices by which the ashes contained in the refuse can be separated from the other matter contained therein, consisting principally of garbage and the like, and each part can be loaded separately into one of two or more vessels lying beside each other.

The figure shown in the accompanying drawing represents a side elevation, partially in section, of the improved apparatus for handling and separating the refuse of cities, the latter standing in front and the crane standing closely behind it.

The mast a of the crane A is secured near one side or end of a dock and provided with two or more booms a of, one of which carries the chute leading from the separator to the hatches of vessels to be loaded, while the other serves to raise the bucket 13 from a cavity 0, provided in the dock near the socket of the mast, after it has been loaded with refuse, and to carry it in the customary manner over the upper hopper D, into which the load is discharged.

The hopper D is provided near its discharge opening with a rotating stirrer E, mounted upon a horizontal shaft 6, to facilitate the discharge and prevent the clogging of the opening. From the hopper D the refuse matter drops upon the bottom of an inclined trough or chute F, the outer end of hatch of the outer vessel WY and is supported from the outer boom a of the crane, while the upper end of the chute is provided with a perforated rocking bottom f, which permits the ashes to drop into the lower hopper G, while the garbage and larger matter will pass down the chute E into the hold of the outer vessel WV. To prevent clogging at the point of discharge from the hopper D, a continuous which leads to the chute F and in a downward direction. This 7 belt H is provided alongits entire length with projecting prongs h, which while the belt is traveling along will touch the upper layers of the refuse sliding down the chute F and will assist to separate the garbage from the ashes, the speed of the belt being so regulated as to give the best practical results. To prevent the arising of dust, a cover h is mounted over the endless belt H and the rocking bottom f, as shown in the drawing. To secure a thorough sifting and separation of the ashes, a shaft J, carrying a cam K, is mounted upon the frame I and will, when revolved by means of a belt and pulley from an engine, vibrate the perforated bottom 1. The thus separated ashes will pass through the hopper G and will slide along the chute L to the vessel V placed nearer to the dock. All the moving parts of the apparatus are actuated by means of pulleys and belts from an engine, preferably mounted upon the crane A. The garbage and ashes will thus be separated and loaded into separate vessels as soon as received and dumped at the dock, saving considerable time and labor. Both chutes F and L are made adjustable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a hopper D, a stirrer E, a chute F, a perforated rocking bottom f, a shaft J, a cam K, an endless barbed belt H, a hopper G, chute L, frame I, crane A, and means for operating the moving parts as and for the purposes herein shown and described.

2. The combination of a hopper D, and a stirrer E with a chute F having a perforated rocking bottom, an endless barbed belt H,and means for supporting and operating the parts, as and for the purposesv herein shown and set forth.
