Abstract

6164. Lake, H. W., [Pino, G.]. March 15. Diving-tools. - Relates to electrically-operated grippers for submarines which are capable of being adjusted about rectangular axes to act in different directions. The arm is moved about these axes, and is lengthened or shortened, and the jaws are actuated by electro - magnotic ratchet mechanisms enclosed in hermetically-sealed chambers a, b, c, d, the mechanisms being controlled from a switchboard 22 situated within the submarine. The mechanism comprises a solenoid 2 in which works a core 1, jointed to a hinged arm 3, which terminates in a pawl 5 engaging with a ratchet-wheel 4. By intermittently energizing the solenoid, a shaft 4 is rotated. A reverse motion of the shaft is obtained by duplicating the device, the ratchet - wheel being adapted to turn in the opposite direction. The gripper 1<a> is pivoted at 20 to a sleeve 16, which works in a hollow shaft 21 and is given a longitudinal movement through a screw 18, which is actuated by a worm and worm-wheel from the mechanism d. The sleeve 21 carries an extension which is connected by a link 16<a> to an extension of the gripper, so that by operating the screw 18 the gripper can be rotated about the pivot 19. The gripper can also be rotated about an axis inclined to the axis of the submarine by rotating the shaft 21 from the mechanism C. The upper arm of the gripper is lengthened and shortened by a screw device 13, 14, and the jaws 8 are opened and closed from the mechanism a by a screw 10<b> working in a guided block 10 connected by toggle levers to the jaws.
