Monoazo dyes are obtained by combining diazo compounds with 3-amino-4-cresol or 3-amino-2- cresol in acid solution. The products obtained from a sulphonated or carboxylated amine dye unmordanted wool which may be after-chromed ; the products obtained from non-sulphonated or non-carboxylated amines are suitable as intermediate compounds in the production of disazo dyes. The following amines are specified as suitable first components : o-nitraniline, p-chloraniline, 1 : 4 : 5-dichloraniline, sulphanilic acid, 1 : 4 : 6- and 1 : 2 : 4-chloraniline sulphonic acids, and 2-naphthylamine-6 : 8-disulphonic acid.
