Abstract
5302. Tate, G. E. March 4. Terminals.-A terminal which can be mounted on the outside of apparatus to which it is fitted, and to which outside leads can be attached, has its external surface completely insulated and protected from the weather. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the terminal a has a transverse hole and clamping- screw to take the lead b and at the lower end is reduced in diameter and screwed at d. This is provided with an outer metal casing e, the lower end of which is reduced in diameter and screws into the casing g of the apparatus, for example a lamp. The lower part d of the terminal passes through a steatite or other insulating-bush h the shoulder of the terminal being insulated by a mica washer j. The space between the terminal and casing is filled with an insulating-material such as sulphur, and opposite the hole in the member a is a steatite bushing l, through which the bared end of the lead is passed, the insulation of which bears against the recess m in the bushing. The inner terminal screws on the stem d and is insulated from the casing by a mica washer o. A screw cap p with mica washer q protects the screw c. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the outer metal case is dispensed with. The end a of the terminal is held in a porcela n bush t by a shoulder s and is screwed into the inner terminal n. The bush t is screwed to the casing g of the apparatus, a washer being employed to keep it water-tight. Washers rare used under the shoulder s. The lead passes axially through the outer terminal into the inner terminal, where it is clamped by a screw c.
