Abstract

18,690. Bourke, A. M. Aug. 13. Insulators of porcelain &c. for telegraph and like wires are constructed with a vertical slot in which the wire is held by a wedge secured by a screw cap. The slot 1, Figs. 1 and 2, having a groove 4, which may be serrated, to receive the wire 6, is provided with tapering recesses 3. A wedge 7, preferably of metal, having corresponding projections, and a groove 9, serrated or not, is secured in the slot by a porcelain &c. screw-cap 11 bearing on the projection 10 and rendered damp-proof by a washer. The projection 10 and depression 12 may be interchanged, and, if the wire does not fit the groove 4, it may be wrapped round with flattened copper wire. The groove is preferably at the level of the upper surface of the shed 5, and may be arranged to receive a fixed serrated metal liner. A screwthreaded metal collar, shrunk or otherwise fixed on, may take the place of the thread on the neck 2. The stem 14 is formed with a rectangular head 15 which slides in a channel-shaped cross-bar 16 and is secured by a set-screw &c. 17. The stem, formed cylindrically or extending diametrically across the inner shed, may be integral with the insulator.
