Abstract

3825. Musgrave, H. Feb. 16. Expanding pulleys. -The gear surface of an expanding pulley is composed of intermeshing segments working on oppositely-inclined guides arranged alternately. This pulley may be arranged to work with a flat belt, or it may be arranged as a non-rotary central element in an epicyclic system of friction or belt gearing. The segments c, c<1>, which intermesh as shown in Fig. 2, slide upon the guides a, a<1>, Fig. 1, which are fastened at their ends to frames b, b<1> secured to a central shaft b<x>. The segments c, c<1> are supported upon rests d, which engage the guides a, a<1> and are shaped with a view to causing the segments c, c' to present an external gear surface of nearly invariable form. The segments c, c' are operated by any suitable means, such as a screw e<1> and a cord e<2>. Variable speed and reversing gearing. - An epicyclic system is shown in Fig. 3. An arm F, secured to a driving-shaft G, carries a planetary shaft C in a movable bearing C<x>. The shaft C carries at one end a gear D constantly engaging a central gear E, which is to be driven and is of constant diameter. At its other end, the shaft C carries a gear B constantly engaging an expanding pulley A, which does not rotate. Variable motion in either direction is obtainable.
