Abstract

3431. Mascord, G. W. Feb. 11. Movable - abutment type; cooling and heating parts; working-fluid supply. - The pistons have inclined faces, so that no clearance space is left in passing through the openings in the abutments. In the gasengine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, two similar drums b, c, mounted on the shaft a, co-operate with the same abutments d, one acting as a compressing piston and the other as an explosion piston. The pistons b<3>, c<3> have inclined faces which work without clearance in the inclined openings d<3> in the abutments. Passages k, i in the casings and ports d<5> in the abutments establish connexion between the several working-chambers when necessary. Fig. 5 shows the cycle diagrammatically. A piston c<3> draws in a charge of gas behind it through the supply port g. The following piston c<3> compresses it into the passage i from which it passes by a port e to the rear of a motor piston b<3>, when an abutment port d<5> makes the necessary connexion. The gas is exploded, and drives the piston forward. Exhaust takes place through a port h. Various modifications may be made in the number and disposition of the pistons and abutments, and a number of such engines may work together. They may be combined so that axial thrust is eliminated. The compression rotor maybe of greater width than the explosion rotor. A single piston drum may be employed, one half being used as the compressor and the other half as the motor. By modifying the arrangement of the ports and passages, the apparatus may be used as a steam motor, or as a pump. The casing is formed in two symmetrical halves e, f, Fig. 1, and the main shaft a, and abutment spindles d<1>, are provided with ball and thrust bearings a', a<3>, e<2>, e<3>. Each of the spindles may have a fly-wheel. Cooling is effected by a water jacket j between the drums b, c, and by water held by centrifugal force in the spaces b<2>, c<2>. Air-cooling may be adopted, the air being drawn into the cooling-spaces and through the shaft by a device on the fly-wheel. The abutments are positively rotated by the engagement of skew teeth d<4> on them with similar skew teeth on the peripheries of the drums b, c. In a modification, external gearing is employed. Packing-rings are fitted where necessary. Forced lubrication may be employed.
