Abstract

1,245,323. IC engines; compressors; hydraulic reciprocating motors. AVIATION SUPPLY MINISTER OF. Jan. 27, 1970 [Feb. 4, 1969] No. 5893/69. Headings F1A, F1B and F1N. A rotary machine comprises a pair of rotors 6, 7 journalled on stub shifts which are inclined relative to each other at an angle of at least 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees, preferably 150 degrees, cylindrical bores in each rotor, sleeves 41 cranked to the angle between the rotor axes having thin opposite ends disposed in bores of the two rotors and being capable of sliding and rotating relative to the bores, substantially cylindrical members 13, 14 fixed relative to the rotors and extending axially within the sleeves, one bore of each interconnected pair communicating with a gas inlet 31, at least one part 40 in each sleeve connecting the inlet with the sleeve cyclically in accordance with rotor rotation, and at least one other part 42 in each sleeve arranged to connect the insertion of the sleeve cyclically with a gas outlet 33. The rotors may be geared together by teeth 8, 9. The inlet ports 40 make connection of the interior of the sleeve 41 with the inlet 31 substantially by relative rotation between the sleeves and the rotor 7, while the outlet ports 42 may make connection of the interior of the sleeve with the outlet 33 substantially by relative axial movement between the sleeves and the cylindrical member 13. The machine may be a compressor or, as shown, a two-stroke IC engine having spark plugs 23. Connection to a drive shaft 36 may be effected by gearing 35, 37. Alternatively, the rotors may be rigidly attached to their stub shafts which are then journalled for rotation and connected to transmission means. The cylindrical members 13, 14, or parts of them may be movable axially to vary the compression ratio. Rotors and stator blading may be provided between a fixed inlet duct 30 and a fixed outlet duct 34 and the corresponding rotor inlets 31 and outlets 33 to assist in changing the engine and driving the rotors. Alternate rotor bores may act as ports of an I.C. engine (or a hydraulic motor) and a compressor (or a hydrostatic transmission unit), and the compressor may be used to change the engine.
