Abstract

3317. Thompson, W. P., [Beaudry, J.]. Feb. 10. Opening. - In self-opening umbrellas of the kind that are opened by springs attached to the frame, the springs are adapted to be compressed when the umbrella is closed. Fig. 1 shows a form in which compression springs 10 are carried bv hollow slotted stretchers 3 and are compressed against stops 16 by subsidiary stretchers S, which are connected to plungers 17 bearing against the springs. In a modification shown in Fig. 6, the subsidiary stretchers are made in two parts 8<a>, 8<b>, which are attached to the runner and git respectively, and carry the springs between their hooked ends. The springs may be carried on, or enclosed in, tubes as shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
