2689. Crocker, E. Feb. 4. Lids and covers.-A device for raising and supporting the covers or lids of kettles, paint-pots, and other receptacles having bow handles, consists of a wood or metal rod 3 on the lid passing through a perforation 4 in the handle, spring guides 6 of wood or metal being also provided, which in some cases may be enclosed in tubes attached to the vessel. To keep the lid in the raised position, the rod may be hinged as shown, may have projections on the sides which act as stops when the rod 3 is given a half-turn, or may have a screw-thread of long pitch, so that the rod is held frictionally. In the last case, the rod may be formed by twisting two wires together. The guides 6 may consist of wires soldered or otherwise attached to the cover, may be formed in one piece with it, or may be formed on a piece of sheet metal secured above or below the cover by means of a nut on the rod 3. The lid may have a rubber or other washer to prevent leakage.
