Abstract

1526. Rathbone, H. W., and Chambers, G. J. Jan. 21. Tobacco pipes.-A clay or like tobacco pipe is formed as a thin shell a to which the bowl a<1> is attached integrally by means of a ring-like web a<2>, so that a large annular space surrounds the bowl. The bowl a' is moulded in a mould c, Fig. 7, from a slip of clay and asbestos or other suitable material, and is then partly dried and placed upon a plug b, Fig. 3. The slip is poured into the mould through an opening b<4> and allowed to remain for some time; the free contents are then discharged, leaving a thin shell attached to the bowl deposited upon the interior of the mould. The operation may be repeated until the desired thickness is obtained. The pipe is then dried and fitted with a mouthpiece. The Provisional Specification also states that the plug, which is preferably divided, may be placed in position in the mould and the slip poured in, forming the inner bowl and the exterior shell of the pipe at one and the same time.
