Abstract

581. Dahl, J. J. Jan. 9. Blades.-Turbine blades are secured in position by a mechanical, or combined mechanical and pneumatic, caulking-machine. A turbine drum t, Fig. 1, is mounted in bearings. A lever h is secured to the shaft and is subjected to the action of a weight g. This weight determines the caulking pressure. A tool s is reciprocated bv an eccentric w. The blades and filling- pieces are placed in the drum grooves by hand, and are caulked in position by the tool s. A bent tool may be used for inserting a few of the last blades, while the remaining blades are inserted by hand in the usual manner. In a modification suitable for the insertion of large blades, the caulking-tool s<2>, Fig. 6, forms the stem of a pneumatic hammer c mounted upon an eccentric c<2>. The tool is drawn away from the work by the action of the eccentric. The blades and distance-pieces are then inserted by hand and the tool is advanced to the work, the rotation of the eccentric c<2> being stopped. The hammer is operated, and the tool s<2> makes a series of impacts; the hammer is then stopped, and the tool is advanced still further .by the eccentric. This finishes the caulking, and at the same time rotates the drum for a short distance. The tool then retires, and the above cycle of operations is repeated. For fixing blades to the interior of a casing, a tool 23, Fig. 8, is reciprocated by a lever 20 subjected to the action of a spring 25 and a cam 19. In all these devices provision is made for the longitudinal movement of the apparatus.
