Abstract

207. Cain, E. M. Jan. 17, 1908, [Convention date]. Track apparatus actuating signals other than on trains; audible signals.-A whistle on the semaphore post is actuated by a passing train which closes an electric switch by deflexion of the rails and energizes an electro-magnet controlling a valve to pass air from a reservoir to the whistle. The pipe 9 is connected to an air-main and, in the normal position of the valve 11, supplies air to the tank 6. The valve 9 is held, by a spiral spring around its spindle, in its normal position but is moved, against the resistance of the spring, by the electro-magoet 18, to connect the reservoir 6 to the whistle 7. Whistles of different tone are provided for each semaphore. The switch for operation by the train is shown in Fig. 6, and comprises a depressible plate 23 carrying an insulated contact-pin 30. The plate 23 is supported on a gasket 24 on a box 22, to which the plate 23 may be pivoted, so as to be depressed by the train when over the box, and the contact 30 thereby engages the pin 31, which is supported on, and insulated from, a spring 34. The supporting-member for the pin 31 moves in vertical guides, and its upward motion is limited by adjusting-screws 39. The upward movement of the plate 23 may be limited by a screw and nut 44. The drawings accompanying the Specification in its original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), show a form of contact apparatus on the track, Fig. 6 (cancelled), which, however, is not described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
