Abstract

24,919. Bradley, C. G. Nov. 19. Paving-blocks.-In order to increase the resiliency of wood and like paving-blocks, grooves, spaces, or saw-cuts are made in the upper or lower surfaces or in the sides or ends. In the form shown in Fig. 1, saw-cuts a, b are made in the upper and lower surfaces alternately to such a depth as to bring the inner ends of the cuts in one surface in the same plane with, or beyond the inner ends of the cuts in the other. The cuts may be inclined, curved, or at right-angles to the surface, or may be partly at right-angles to the surface and partly inclined or curved. In cases where the saw-cuts are only carried to such a depth that the inner ends are in the same plane or are in different planes with a continuous portion between them, grooves, preferably wider than the continuous portion, may be formed in one or both ends of the block to prevent pressure against an adjacent block due to the expansion of the continuous portion. Grooves may also be formed in the sides or ends of the blocks to act as keyways to the binding-material. The saw-cuts &c. in the surfaces may be left open or may be filled with tar, pitch, or similar material. When the blocks are laid in such a manner as to bring the grooves in one block opposite grooves in an adjacent block or blocks, they are bound together by metal, wood, or like strips. The blocks are laid on a somewhat yielding layer such as an open-work mat, sawdust, or sawdust mixed with oil or other suitable liquid, covering the foundation.
