Abstract
23,660. Hewer, E. Nov. 5. Spokes; hubs; metallic wheels; building wheels. - In building wheels, hollow metal spokes B, Fig. 1, are attached by one or more rivets C to rim sections A and are fitted, at their inner ends, with loose wedge-shaped blocks F. The sections are placed together in one plane and an outer tyrecarrying rim H is shrunk on whereby the wedge blocks are driven firmly together and plates J are riveted over the ends of the sections connecting them together and to the outer rim H. Between the inner ends of the spokes are placed wood filling-pieces K through which pass bolts L for securing the wheel to the hub flanges. To give lateral rigidity dowel pins G may be driven between the wedge blocks, or the blocks may be shaped to interlock as shown in Fig. 6. Instead of the rivets C, the outer ends of the spokes are provided with blocks D, Fig. 2, carrying two or more rivets E, and the abutting ends of the sections A may be angular as in Fig. 3.
