Abstract

23,521. Twinberrow, J. D., and McKerrow, R. C. Nov. 3. Windows.-Sliding sashes for vehicles are balanced by belt-crank levers acted on by compressed springs mounted in cylindrical casings to protect them from moisture. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the longer arm d of a bell - crank lever pivoted to a bracket c on the frame has a roller or hard-wood contact-piece e bearing against an horizontal bar g which supports the sash, and the shorter arm h is pivoted to a rod k having a disk l which abuts against the spring m mounted in a cylindrical casing n. The arrangement is such that the resisting force of the spring increases as the leverage on the bell-crank increases. In a modification for windows having a longer travel, the casing carrying the spring n is pivoted at the bottom of the well, and the short arm of the lever is flexibly connected to the end of the rod k. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, two bell-crank levers are pivoted together at t, each longer arm s being cylindrical and containing a spring that acts on the shorter arm of the other lever. One long arm is pivoted to the bottom of the door casing, while the other bears against the lower rail of the sash.
