Abstract

15,403. Almond, W. J. C., and Opie, J. A. June 27. Force-transmitting mechanism.-In railway-vehicle brakes which are applied by displacing in opposite directions a duplicate set of longitudinallymovable buffer - rods which extend throughout the train, the buffer-rods engage directly with opposite ends of levers mounted on transverse brake shafts, and also serve as draw-bars. The Figures show such a pair of rods c, f, which engage at the centre of the vehicle the opposite ends of a cross lever i secured to the centre of a shaft h mounted in fixed bearings. The shaft h further has secured to each end a cross-bar k, the opposite ends of which are connected to the brake hangers o by brake rods l, n having interposed springs m. The rods n have a slotted connexion, as shown in Fig. 4, with cross-bars p connecting pairs of brake hangers o, in order to provide the necessary lost motion when the brakes are applied. The application is effected from the engine or brake van by moving the rods c, f in opposite directions, so as to rock the shafts h, by means of lever mechanism or fluid pressure. If one of the brake rods l, n becomes broken, the brakes are applied by the unbalanced springs m. The rods c, f are mounted in bearings which allow longitudinal sliding for a short distance ; and provision is made for buffer and draw springs in suitablyarranged boxes.
