Abstract

23,412. Gouldbourn, J., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. Nov. 3. ' Hammers, power.-Machines for use in beating- out welts are modified so as to reduce the vibration, and to facilitate the adjustment of the spring in the chain of parts which actuates the hammer; and of the height between the hammer and the anvil. The upper end of the hammer plunger C<1> is pivotally connected to one arm of a lever E, which is pivoted on a sleeve mounted on a shaft F. The other arm E<1> of this lever carries an adjusting-screw E<2> for a special spring G<3>, which is located in an arm G<1> of a second lever G also pivoted to the sleeve referred to above. The other arm of the lever G is pivotally connected to a rod D, which is actuated by an eccentric B<1> on the driving-shaft B. The levers E, G are furnished with stop faces to limit the motion between them in the direction in which the spring G<3> tends to separate them. With this construction, the motion of the connecting-rod D is transmitted through the spring G<3> and the stop faces to the lever E, and thence to the hammer, which imparts a yielding blow to the work. To enable the distance between the hammer and the anvil L to be adjusted, the shaft F is eccentrically mounted on journals F<1>, F<2>, Fig. 2, carried in bearings F3, F<4> located in extensions F<5> from the machine frame. A handle H affords means for rotating the shaft F, which is retained in its adjusted position by a spring K<1> and nut K. Conveniently, the arms E', G<1>, and the adjusting- devices for the spring G<3> are made to balance the hammer, the'plunger C<1>, and the connecting-rod D about their axis of oscillation.
