SHEARING OR CLIPPING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 10, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, ARTHUR Haw'rnnr, a
Acitizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at 671 Calle Maipu, Buenos Aires, Argentina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Shearing or Clipping Machines, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to machines for shearing or clipping the wool or hair of animals and for similar uses, thel principal obj eet being to provide improved means for applying the tension or pressure necessary for maintaining the combs and cutters in operative or cutting contact, whereby the machine is rendered more eilicient in operation the movement of the parts is performed more evenly and perfectly than with the existing arrangements and the life of the machine is considerably augmented or lengthened.
According to thisinvention the oscillatory parts together with the cutter are arranged in an invariable plane with respect to the body casing or hand piece and the comb in a variable parallel plane in regard to the cutter.
ln order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into ett'ect I will proceed to describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan of a shearing or clipping machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Figs. 3 and @L are transverse sections taken on the lines A-B and CD respectively in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section illustrating a modified arrangement for applying the tension for approximating the comb to the cutter.
l indicates the body or casing which serves as a handle or hand piece for the operator when using the machine. Mounted on the semi-spherical fulcrum or support 2, in the interior of the aforesaid body, is the oscillating forked lever 3, the forward end of the latter being arranged in conjunction with a tension pin 4 and adapted to conveniently actuate the cutter 5. The said lever is actuated or oscillated by means of the race 3 in which works the roller 6 pertaining to the eccentric pin 6 carried by the eccentric disk 6, the latter being fast on the shaft 7 whereby rotary motion is imparted to the disk and converted into oscil- Patented Nov. 17, 1914. Serial No. 760,137.
lating or vibrating motion by the engagggement of the eccentric pin 6 and roller G in the race 3. The semi-spherical fulcrum or support 2. constitutes the center of oscillation of the forked lever 3 and has a screwed portion extending therefrom; a lock nut 9 securing the same to the transverse piece or bridge 10 which is attached to the body casing 1 by screws 11. By slackening the nut 9 and adjusting the support 2 wear can be compensated for or taken up. The screw 8 is furnished with a milled or other nut 12 by adjusting which, in conjunction with the spherical faced washer 13, tension may be applied to the lever 111 whereof one extremity has a fixed bearing in the casing 1 and the other extremity a free bearing on the outer side of the comb 15 so that pressure may be exerted on the latter to keep the same in working Contact with the cutter The comb 15 is held in position on the base 17 by means of screws 16: the base being adapted to move vertically bv virtue of the pins or guides 19 which work in bushings 1S carried in openings provided therefor in the bodv casing 1. By screwing the nut 12 inwardlv along the screw post S it will be obvious that thelever 11i will be pressed inward and the end thereof which engages with the `comb 15 will exert an increased pressure on the comb 15; the pressure between that part and the cutter 5 being therebv controlled. Thus it will also be obvious that this tension or pressure is adapted for adjustment so as to produce a verv effective cutting contact between the said parts.
In the modified construction. the above described adjustment is obtained bv means of a base plate 20 to which the comb 15 is secured by the screws 16. The sides of the said base plate present oblique lugs which enter slots of corresponding Obliquity formed in the body casing 1 of the machine. The base 20 is connected by a link 23 with a screwed segment 22, the latter being operated longitudinally by the internally screw threaded ring or nut 21. Thus by rotating the ring 21, in the one direction or the other, the segment 22 is caused to move in a plane at right angles to the plane of rotation of the ring, with the result that the base 20 moves in an oblique direction and increases or decreases the tension or pressure between the comb 15 and cutter 5,
the adjustment being obtained in such a manner that the plane of the comb relatively to that of the other parts of the shears is unaltered. i
Various means may be adopted for carrying the invention into practice without departing from the essential rfeatures thereof, viZ2--moving and retaining the comb in such a manner that the same is impelled against the cutter with an even controllable pressure as distinguished from 4approximating the cutter to the comb as heretofore usually adopted in the known types of shearing or clipping machines.
rl`he operation or movement of the shear or clipper, otherwise than in connection with the above described improved method of applying the tension, is of the usual character; the shaft 7 operating the eccentric disk 6 and pin 6 with the roller 6 and thereby through the race 3 the forked `lever 3 which is caused to oscillate upon the semi-spherical support 2 and at the outer end thereof to impart the necessary movement to the cutter 5.
"What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. In a shearing or clipping machine, the combination of an oscillating lever, a transverse bridge, a semi-spherical bearing carried by said bridge and arranged to engage with the underside of saidV lever between the ends thereof, a tension pin bearing on the upper side of said lever between said semi-spherical bearing and the outer end of the lever, a cutter in operative relation to said lever, a comb, an adjustable base for said comb, guides for maintaining the comb in a plane parallel to that of the cutter and a member for imparting a movement to the base and comb toward the cutter' so as to adjust and control the pressure of the comb against the cutter.
2. ln a shearing or clipping machine, the combination of an oscillating` lever, a transverse bridge, a semi-spherical bearing car ried by said bridge and arranged to engage with the underside of said lever between the ends thereof, a tension pin bearing on the upper side of said lever between said semi-spherical bearing and the outer ends of the lever, a cutter inoperative relation to said lever, a comb, an adjustable base for said comb, 'oblique lugs on said base, slots of corresponding Obliquity formed inthe casing of the machine for receiving said lugs and means for imparting a movement to the said base so as to adjust and control the pressure of the comb against the cutter'.
3. ln shearing or clipping machine, the combination of an oscillating lever, a transverse bridge, Da semi-spherical bearing carried by said bridge and arranged to engage with the undersideof said lever between the ends thereof, a tension pin bearing on the upper side of said lever between said semi spherical bearing andv the outer end of the lever, a cutter in operative relation to .i
said lever, .a comb, an adjustable base for said comb, oblique lugs on said base, slots of corresponding Obliquity formed in the casing of the machine for engaging with said lugs and a screwed segment for imparting a movement to the said base so as to adjust and control the pressure of the comb against the cutter.
ln testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
