Abstract
22,238. Humphreys, J. E. Oct. 20. Steering and balancing.-An aerial machine is provided with pivoted lateral balancing-planes so correlated that, when one plane is positively tilted or is released so as to be free to be tilted, the other is locked in its normal position, by mechanism operated manually or automatically. In one form, as applied to a bi-plane machine, the balancing-planes d, Fig. 6, are pivoted at the edges of the upper main plane a, and are locked in position or tilted by means of slotted slides h moved by links g connected to a pendulum e which swings about a fore-and-aft axis. When the machine rises at one side, the slide h at that side is moved so that the link j connected to the plane d rises in the slot o and so tilts the plane, while the movement of the slide on the opposite side of the machine locks the plane on that side. Instead of being tilted by the link j rising in the inclined slot o, the planes d when released may be tilted by wind pressure acting on valves fixed at right-angles to the planes. The planes may be tilted and locked by means of a manually-operated lever-system. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that the planes may be triangular in shape and in two parts, one part being pivotally suspended below and from the other so that the centre of pressure will always be in the line of the plane axis. The parts may be curved. The planes may also be correlated so that when one is tilted upwards the other is tilted downwards, and vice versa.
