Abstract
20,352. Hankin, M., and Wolff, F. Sept. 28. Resistances. -A resistance suitable for regulating consists of a metal box a containing a badlyconducting powder, in which are embedded two adjustable terminals d placed at opposite ends of the box, so that the distance between the ends of the terminals is not more than twice the lateral distance between the terminals and the 'box. The powder may consist of a mixture of 50 parts of refractory earth, 7¢ of plumbago, 1 of asbestos fibre, and 58¢ of granulated cast iron, or it may consist of particles of cast iron alone. These are moistened and dried, and again moistened before being rammed into the box. A. supplementary terminal h may be used for taking off current flowing to the cover. The terminals are insulated by mica washers g and are fixed in position by nuts e, f. Such resistances may be used for starting motors, and also in circuit with arc or incandescent lamps.
