Optical illusions, producing.-A device for producing advertisements or designs continuously and in rotation has means for displaying a dissolving multi-coloured background that is apparently independent of the change in the advertisement or designs. A transparent screen is backed with opaque lines or bars B, Fig. 8, behind which an opaque or transparent or light-diffusing plate is placed bearing a plurality of designs upon its front face, and having upon either face a colour scheme of bars or curves E', F<1>, G<1>, so that the display of each design is accompanied by the display of a particular set of colour lines. A plurality of colour lines may be exposed at a given time between any two of the bars of the screen. A different colour design may be placed upon the border a, b, Fig. 5, of the back plate to that placed within the border, so that the border will remain distinct from the body part of the background throughout the change of background display. The back plate may be operated by an electric motor H, Fig. 6, which works a cam K linked to the back plate by a link L, through a worm I and worm-wheel J. The device may take the form of a post-card or an envelope with an - aperture having a celluloid, gelatine, or like screen A, Fig. 11, over it, fastened at one end A' only to prevent distortion, and an additional plate D, slidingly mounted thereon and actuated from one end.
