RUDOLPH HAGEN, OF KINGS NORTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LIVERMORE AND KNIGHT:
00., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND,
A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
ADVERTISING DE'VICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 30, 1908. Serial No. 465,083.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Renown IiAGEN, subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, residingat Enderby, Middleton l land, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an a paratus for displaying advertisements the o ject of 'the device being to make the displayed matter ap car as though it' were floating in the air.
K ow according to this invention I provide a suitable frame of wood, cardboard, millboard or of any other suitable material across which is stretched a piece of gauze, chiffon, muslin, gossamer, or other suitable material and secured thereto by glue or other suitable means. Secured to the front of the gauze, muslin, or other material is the matter to be displayed which may be devices, pictures, figures, letters, or a combination of these or any of them.
'lhe object of using gauze or such like material is to prevent the illusion from being destroyed by the material of which the background is composed being easily visible or by the glitter of a polishcd surface when ex posed to a strong light as would result, if wire netting for instance, in the one case, and glass or transparent celluloid, in the other case, were substituted for the gauze or similar material.
The frames may be provided with loobs or hooks by means of which they may be suspended in any convenient lace, or I may attach suitable supports to t is back of the frame, or may hinge together two or more frames as hereinbefore described in such a manner as to mutually support one another.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which I Figure 1 shows an advertlsing device constructed according to this invention adapted to be suspended in any convenient p ace. Fig. 2 is section of same; F ig. 3 shows an advertising device adaptedto be placed on a counter or table or other Iikesupport. Fig. 4 is end view of same. Fig. 5 1's section of same.
The same letters denote the same parts in all the figures.
a is a frame of wood, cardboard, millboard, or of any other suitable material, the
frame being shown elliptical by Fig. 1', and
rectangular by Fig. 3.
b is a piece of gauze, chiffon, muslin, hsse,
gossamer, or other suitable material which is stretched across the back of the frame a and is secured thereto by glue or other suitable means. This gauze or other suitable mate rial which, although shown in coarse mesh in the drawings for the sake of ofiicial reproduction, is of very fine texture and is dark gray, neutral tinted, smokecolor,-or black, or of any other color or tint which absorbs the rays of light so as to be not readily discernible when exposed to the lightof the sun or to an artificial light. v
The matter to be displayed is made of paper, celluloid, tinfoil, or other'suitable material, and may consist of letters 0, an illustration of an article d, a numeral, or numerals e, a picture or a combination of letters, dc vices and. pictures or any of them. vertising matter is secured to the material I) by glue or other suitable means.
When the advertising device such as is shown by Fig. 1 is suspended in a shop window, or other convenient place or position, the advertisement appears to be floating in the air.
1n the case of-thc device shown by. Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the inner portion of the supportf is of such a shade as to blend with the color of I the material I) so as to render the material I) not readily discernible when exposed tothe light.
It will be understood that my invention ay he applied in various ways of which the illustrations given are merely examples.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is An advertisin r dcvicecomprising a frame, a background 0 textile material of fine texture and of a neutral tint secured to said frame and characters secured to said background.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name-to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUDOLPH HAGEN.
