Abstract

16,133. Birkbeck, H., [Andrew Railway Safety Appliance Co.]. July 29. Undercarriages; brakes; breakdowns, preventing accidents through.-A railway vehicle is provided with means for supporting it upon the rails in the event of the derailment of the wheels, for simultaneously applying the brakes and signalling to the engineer, for preventing derailment in case of breakage of the axle, and for preventing the dropping of the spring equipment and the journal box in case of accident thereto. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a roller 11 is mounted with vertical play in a cylindrical casing 12 on a frame 8, secured by straps 7 to, or integral with, the journal box 4, and bolted also to the equalizer bar of the truck frame. Wheels 22 are journaled upon a split sleeve 18 on the axle, and beam supports 25, loosely mounted upon the sleeve, are secured at their ends to the front cross-beam 29 of the truck and to the centre bolster framing 30. Safety bands 31 encircle the spring casings 32. Should the wheels 3 leave the rails, the rails will be engaged by a wheel 22 on the one side and by a roller 11 on the other. At the same time the air brakes will he applied by the engagement of the roller 11 with a rod 35 connected to a valve 38 in the train-pipe. A second valve 40 is actuated for the same purpose by the striking of one of the wheels 22 against a lever 43 pivoted at 44 ; and there is also a connexion 45 between the lever 43 and the valve of the engineer's whistle. The flanges 23 of the wheels 22 are made with a sharper bevel than the flanges 24 to ensure the engagement of the treads of these wheels with the rails, and to throw the flange of the wheel 3 clear of the bolts of the track. The sleeve 18 serves to hold the two parts of a broken axle together, while the beam supports 25 act as a journal bearing in case of breakage of an outer journal, and also stiffen the truck. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, pivoted flanged shoes 58 are substituted for the rollers 11, and if desired also for the wheels 22. Springs 65 keep the shoes normally level. A chain 62, passing over the bars 63 and secured to the journal box, keeps the box suspended in case of breakage. In another modification, the shoes are fixed to the truck frame.
