Abstract
15,245. Cortez, J. J. de M. July 18. Printing-surfaces ; printing in several colours ; embossing. - Relates to means for printing and embossing maps. A photographic negative is first taken of the original showing the altitude curves, and from this negative two zinc plates are formed, one containing everything in the original and the other with the altitude curves omitted. Reference holes are bored at each corner and through points corresponding to the altitude curves on each plate. A number of sheets of thin metal, one for each curve, covered on one side with paper and provided with the same reference holes, are impressed against the first zinc plate. The plates thus printed are cut along the corresponding curve. The sheets thus formed, after being freed from paper, are superposed on a base-plate and nailed together, thus forming the bottom die. The second zinc plate is then covered on its smooth side with a sheet of paper, and an impression made from the first zinc plate in register with the design on the other side. This plate is then cut up along the curves, and each curve after having been cleaned is secured on a separate thin metal sheet, provided at the corners with the usual reference holes. Each metal sheet with its curve is then fixed on to a sheet of cardboard, the centre of both the metal sheet and the cardboard being then hollowed out to accommodate the relief of the bottom die. The relief die is then covered with a sheet of filterpaper and upon this the paper to be printed is placed, both being shaped to the contour of the die by a wet sponge. The supplementary curves obtained from the cutting of the curves for the relief die are then superposed, and the whole is subjected to pressure. The first zinc curve with its backing of metal and cardboard is then inked, laid upon the relief thus produced, and subjected to pressure. This curve is removed, a corresponding curve of filter-paper inserted in its place, and an impression is taken from the remaining inked curves in succession.
