Abstract

130,820. Cortez, O. de M., and Menezes, E. de. Sept. 5, 1918. Embossing; forming or shaping.-A modification of the process for producing relief maps described in Specification 15,245/08 consists in print. ing the map in black or colours before the embossing operation, and embossing the map in one operation instead of contour by contour. The " complementary " curves are attached together in groups to facilitate handling, and electrotypes of the relief die and of the groups of curves may be employed. From a photographic negative of the original map showing contour lines, two zinc plates are prepared, one, the " complete " zinc, containing everything in the original, and the other, the " incomplete " zinc, with the contour lines omitted. These zinc plates are secured to zinc mounts having wide margins, in the corners of which reference holes are bored. A number of zinc plates, one for each contour, and of a thickness equal to the required difference in height of the contours on the relief map, are covered on one side with paper and printed by means of the " complete " zinc. Reference holes are bored through the contour lines of these zinc plates, and they are then cut along the contour lines, a different line for each plate, and the paper is then removed. The inner cuttings are then superposed in register and secured to a base to form a relief die. The outer cuttings, or " complementary " curves are secured together in groups. Sheets of paper to form the maps are printed bv means of the " incomplete " zinc and, after being moistened, are placed on the relief die or an electrotype obtained therefrom, and the groups of " complementary " curves or electrotypes prepared from them are arranged in place about the relief die and subjected to pressure. The maps may be finally varnished.
