Abstract

15,089. Cody, R. D. July 16. Vapour lamps and burners. - An i n c a n - descent vapour lamp, intended chiefly for use with petroleum, is constructed so that a portion of the gaseous mixture is by-passed to provide a flame to heat the vaporizing and superheating chambers. At starting, the cup 16 is filled with a combustible which is ignited. When the chamber 9 has been sufficiently heated, petroleum is admitted by opening the valve 11. The vaporized oil passes through the passages 8 to the superheating chamber 5, whence it passes to the valve 18 by the pipe 17. Issuing from this valve it flows into the tube 19 and then into the chamber 2, where the air and vapour are mixed before passing into the burner tubes 4. A portion of the gaseous mixture passes down the tube 6 to the openings 7, where it is ignited and serves to heat both the vaporizing- chamber 9 and the superheating-chamber 5 which are filled with metal botings. A shield 22 is provided to protect the flame at 7 when the light is turned low. The invention is applicable to all cases where liquid hydrocarbons are vaporized to produce a Bunsen flame.
