Abstract
14,222. Mountain & Gibson, and Head, A. F. H. July 4. Sanding rails.-Pedals such as are used for operating sanding or other mechanism on tramway &c. vehicles are adapted to be disposed with the upper part flush with the floor when not in use, and are also rendered incapable of removal except by special manipulation. The pedal a is cut away at a<3> so as to leave a reduced part a<2>, which, when the pedal is in the operative position, rests on a shoulder f<1> formed in one arm of the usual bell-crank f. To place the pedal in the inoperative position, it is turned so that the part a<2> is clear of the bell-crank, when it may be dropped with its top part a' resting on the upper portion of the socket b and flush with the floor in which the socket is inset. The pedal is provided with a lug a<4> adapted to pass through a slot bl formed in the socket b when the bell-crank f has been moved from under the slot after disconnecting the rod g. The lug is then turned under the wall of the socket b, and as the slot b<1> is directly over the bell-crank f it is impossible to remove the pedal unless the bell-crank is turned out of the way by disconnecting it from the rod g.
